Consultation launched on new Bristol free school for children with autism6th October 2016
A consultation will be launched later this month on a new free school, SGS Pegasus School, for children with autism.
Due to open in September 2017, the school, which was given approval by the Secretary of State back in February 2016, will focus on providing intensive support to 80 children of all ages and will aim to support them into mainstream education.
There is a shortage of specialist school places for children with autism in South Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas. This new school will not only be local to where these children live but also designed to offer a personalised approach to learning and to truly meeting the needs of children with autism.
The consultation commencing on October 6 will allow the local community to have their say.
Kevin Hamblin, CEO of SGS Academy Trust, commented: "The SGS Pegasus School will be the only local special school in South Gloucestershire to provide a mainstream curriculum personalised and tailored to meet the specific needs of children with autism. Our school will provide a clear pathway from the age of 4 to 19.
"For the first time the curriculum will be designed to wrap around your child's needs ensuring that we meet all of their learning, sensory or behavioural needs. We will build on a child's strengths and work closely with parents and carers as we know they are experts in understanding the needs of their children. The staff will not only be experienced in teaching children with autism but will have access to speech and language and occupational therapists to advise and support a child's learning. Our purpose built school will be designed to support the teaching and learning of children with autism and to reduce sensory overload wherever possible. This is an exciting opportunity and we welcome your views and involvement."
